Floodplain Fencing Workshops

NRM North is hosting a series of workshops this month, to give flood-affected landholders a better insight into damage mitigation techniques in future flood events.

The Floodplain Fencing Workshops will focus on how to better understand riverine processes, design flood resilient fences and how to undertake effective streamside revegetation.

Julian Martin from Water Technology will lead the discussion on broadscale riverine processes, flood resilience, rehabilitation, and best practice stream management. Program Manager Jesse Webster said the workshops are a valuable collaboration offering an excellent opportunity for landholders to learn and connect.

“The workshops will have representatives from Rural Alive and Well, Rural Business Tasmania and the State Emergency Service to provide advice on flood recovery as well as preparing for the next one” said Mr Webster.

Stephen Griffiths from Griffiths Fencing Solutions will demonstrate the benefits of ‘drop down’ fencing to prevent fences from being destroyed in a flood, and Tim Reed from Wenlock Enterprises will discuss fencing design on floodplains. Herbert Staubmann from Habitat Plants and Denis Giasli from Land Management North will offer advice about effective revegetation practises and streamside vegetation management.

The workshops tie in well with NRM North’s Tamar Action Grant program which is designed to improve waterway health through stock exclusion methods, and the Small Farm Living program that helps smallholders improve environmental values through the sharing of knowledge.
