The Weeds Action Fund aims to improve the productive value of agricultural land and protect Tasmania’s natural values, by removing the harmful effects of priority weeds. Now in Stage Two, the third funding round opened yesterday, offering farmers, community organisations, land managers and other entities small grants to build on previous efforts undertaken through the fund.

Tasmanian Weeds Action Fund Coordinator, John White from NRM North, said the program is designed to support and promote a collaborative approach, to prevent weeds from becoming a serious threat to Tasmania’s natural resources.

“Landholders are encouraged to identify the priority weeds that impact their land, and work together to strategically treat, and where possible, eradicate those weeds,” he said.

The Weeds Action Fund Targeted Small Grants Program follows on from the earlier small and large multi-year grants rounds in 2018-19 (34 projects for a total of $143,658), in 2020 (26 projects valued at $200,000) and in 2021-24 (24 projects valued at $2,403,065 over three years).

Grants are available for new projects that demonstrate collaborative partnerships for coordinated containment or eradication activities, or projects that add value to existing projects by broadening their impact or geographical range.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jo Palmer, said the grants provided an excellent opportunity for landholders to increase the value of their agricultural land.

“Through supporting and co-investing with landowners, local government and the broader community, the program will achieve long-term benefits that will contribute to the sustainable growth of Tasmania’s agricultural production,”

Ms Palmer said.
