Tasmanian soil management resources released
Tasmanian landholders can now access a wealth of information about how to best manage soil drainage and soil nutrition with the release of Tasmanian-specific soil management decision support tools today.
Published by the Tasmanian NRMs Soil Extension Program, the Soil Management Decision Support Systems are the culmination of expert information from consultants, contractors, farmers, and researchers.
NRM North Soil Extension Officer Tahlia Kinrade said the publications aimed to address a gap in practical applications of soil science information.
“Landholders have told us there were gaps in knowledge … these publications will deliver the information required to fill this need,” said Ms Kinrade.
The first support tool is an update of the Tasmanian Drainage Information Package. Initially prepared by Bill Cotching and Colin Bastick in 1996, the new publication also by Bill Cotching and RMCG’s Samantha Gadsby draws on years of experience to deliver a practical guide on managing waterlogged paddocks, and features important information on how to sustainably manage drainage works on your property.
A second two-part support tool provides comprehensive information about overall nutrient management (authored by scientist Bill Cotching), and also includes a soil test interpretation guide for dryland grazing (authored by RMCG’s Doris Blaesing and Naomi Palombi).
The application of these support tools will allow Tasmanian farmers to make more informed decisions about productively and sustainably managing soil nutrients and soil water on-farm.

The publications were launched with project partners at Brickendon Estate in Longford today.
