Sustainable Agriculture Facilitator (SAF)

The Sustainable Agriculture Facilitator (SAF) program supports northern Tasmanian farmers, landholders, and agricultural industries in adopting climate-smart, sustainable practices. The SAF helps stakeholders implement practices to build climate resilience, reduce emissions, and explore new opportunities in biodiversity and carbon markets. Through these initiatives, the SAF program aims to foster a sustainable agricultural landscape that aligns with regional and national sustainability goals.

Background

Formerly known as the Regional Agriculture Landcare Facilitator (RALF), the program has evolved to meet changing environmental and industry needs. With a renewed focus on climate resilience and sustainable practices, the SAF program builds on the successes of the RALF. This shift reflects the growing emphasis on biodiversity, natural resource management, and sustainability initiatives across Tasmania. By facilitating access to resources, grants, and knowledge, the SAF program aims to strengthen partnerships with landholders, industry groups, and local communities to deliver long-term agricultural and environmental benefits in northern Tasmania.

Project plan

The SAF program will continue to support the northern Tasmanian agriculture sector through:

  • Workshops, Field Demonstrations, and Peer Learning: Hosting hands-on sessions in soil management, climate resilience, and sustainable practices to empower farmers with practical tools and skills.
  • Sustainability Services: Engaging with industry groups and communities to enhance understanding and uptake of sustainable agriculture practices, including participation in biodiversity and carbon incentive programs.
  • Resource Collaboration: Partnering with local stakeholders to develop projects that address common agricultural challenges, enhance productivity, and explore funding opportunities.
  • Climate Adaptation Support: Facilitating training and resources on biosecurity, water management, and climate-smart technologies, helping farming communities adapt to environmental and market changes.

This program will build on the legacy of the RALF, continuing its core mission while expanding to meet new sustainability challenges and opportunities for northern Tasmania’s agricultural sector.
