The Household Hazardous Waste Collection facilitates the disposal of potentially dangerous substances like cleaning solvents and garden chemicals to reduce landfill, and the impact they have on our waterways.
The last collection happened between 1 March and 31 March 2025. The next collection is scheduled for September to October 2025.

Background
Household hazardous waste refers to the chemicals used in and around the home that are flammable, toxic, explosive, or corrosive. The average Australian home stores many hazardous substances including everyday household items such as bleach or other cleaning solvents, as well as garden and pool chemicals.
It is dangerous to dispose of household hazardous waste in your general rubbish or recycling bin. These chemicals can cause fires in bins and garbage trucks, creating a safety hazard for truck drivers, the general community, and the environment.
Project Plan
Circular North is committed to facilitating the safe disposal of household hazardous waste across northern Tasmania, working closely with local councils and the community. During designated collection times, residents can responsibly dispose of items such as pesticides, chemicals, and flammable materials that pose risks to health, wildlife, and the environment if not handled properly.
Key components of the project include:
By participating in household hazardous waste collections, Tasmanians contribute to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future, reinforcing Circular North's vision of transforming waste management into a proactive, community-driven effort toward zero waste.
Circular North works with experts DMN Enviro to safely collect, store, transport and dispose of the chemicals collected.
Since May 2024, northern Tasmanians have recovered 10,657 kg of household hazardous waste through three collection campaigns, an important step toward a more circular region. The first campaign in April 2024 collected 2,836 kg, followed by 3,193 kg in Spring 2024 (a 12.6% increase) and 4,628 kg in Autumn 2025 (a further 44.9% jump).
