African Boxthorn is a declared weed and Weed of National Significance, found on the Furneaux Islands.
NRM North is delivering a $200,000 project in the Furneaux Islands as part of Stage 3 of the Tasmanian Government’s Weeds Action Fund (WAF), supporting local landholders and communities to take the lead on priority weed management.
Running until 2027, Stage 3 of the Weeds Action Fund will invest a further $1.19 million to deliver six projects across Tasmania. The WAF Furneaux Islands Project builds on strong foundations already established in the region, focusing on education, training and coordinated action to protect agricultural productivity and island ecosystems.
Weeds remain one of the most significant threats to Tasmania’s natural environments and productive landscapes, reducing farm productivity, impacting biodiversity and increasing long-term management costs. Addressing these challenges requires sustained effort, shared responsibility and strong local partnerships.
Delivered by NRM North, the Furneaux Islands project will target priority weeds by increasing the capacity of local landholders to identify, manage and prevent weed infestations. The project will increase the capacity of the local community to self-manage weed management initiatives and contribute to long-term biosecurity outcomes.
Key project activities include facilitating workshops to support coordinated weed management and planning, providing access to accredited ChemCERT training for safe and effective herbicide use, increasing landholder awareness of regional priority weeds and best-practice management, and supporting coordinated weed action planning across land tenures.
NRM North is now seeking expressions of interest from landholders on Flinders Island and across the Furneaux Island group to participate in the project. More information can be found at www.nrmnorth.org.au
This project is funded by the Tasmanian Government through the Tasmanian Weeds Action Fund, facilitated by NRM North.
