Almost 400 people discover the wonders of the Kanamaluka / Tamar estuary
Almost 400 people attended the Tamar Estuary and Esk Rivers (TEER) Program’s Kanamaluka / Tamar Discovery Day at Seahorse World on Saturday 24 October 2026, celebrating the estuary ’s unique environment, wildlife and heritage.
The free, family-friendly event brought the community together through interactive displays, guided tours, children’s activities and educational experiences, giving visitors an opportunity to discover the estuary’s natural values, understand the challenges it faces and learn how they can support local conservation.
TEER Program Manager Dr Michael Murunga said the strong attendance reflected the community’s interest in the future of the estuary.
“It was fantastic to see so many families come together to learn more about the Kanamaluka / Tamar. The enthusiasm shown by families, stallholders and event partners highlights the value of creating accessible opportunities for people to connect with and care for their local environment.”
“Demand was so strong for this year’s event, we had to close registrations much earlier than expected. It was certainly the biggest Discovery Day we’ve held to date,” he said.

Thanks to the generous support of Bell Bay Aluminium, Petuna Aquaculture and Seahorse World, the event was free for the community.
Seahorse World and Platypus House both provided discounted guided tours for children which also sold out throughout the day, as families took advantage of the offer to enjoy an affordable and educational outing.
Community members can continue supporting the estuary by learning about local environmental initiatives and getting involved in conservation projects across the region.
