Background
A circular economy reduces waste by keeping resources in use for as long as possible – avoiding, reducing, reusing, repairing and recycling materials. It also helps communities save money, extend the life of valuable materials and create new opportunities to help Tasmania move towards a future where nothing is wasted.
To support this vision, the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Board has established the Community Grants Program to fund community-led projects that reduce waste and strengthen Tasmania's circular economy.
A total of $500,000 in grant funding is available through the program, which is being administered by NRM North on the Board's behalf.
Eligible not-for-profit and community groups in Tasmania can apply for grants between $10,000 to $50,000 to bring their ideas to life.

- Incorporated community groups
- Registered charities
- Approved charitable recyclers
- Eligible not-for-profit organisations
- Non-distributing cooperatives
- Not-for-profit social enterprises
- Applicants must have substantial operations in Tasmania and be able to demonstrate organisational solvency.

The Community Grants Program supports delivery of the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy, which sets out Tasmania’s approach to reducing waste and recovering more value from the materials we use.
The waste hierarchy is central to the Strategy. It ranks how we manage materials from most to least preferred: avoiding waste first, then reducing, reusing, repairing and recycling, with disposal to landfill as a last resort.
Community organisations across Tasmania are already leading this work, running repair cafés, creating community hubs and delivering local avoid, reduce, reuse, repair and recycle initiatives. The Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Board’s Community Grants Program provides funding to help them start new projects, build on existing ones and reach more communities.

Projects must align with the waste hierarchy and support avoid, reduce, reuse, repair or recycle outcomes, with a preference for action higher up the heirarchy.

- individuals
- sole traders
- partnerships
- unincorporated community groups
- trusts
- for-profit companies
- government agencies
- local government body corporates
- political parties
- statutory corporations and government-owned businesses
- unincorporated groups may partner with an eligible organisation acting as an auspicing body.
No. Multi-year funding will not be considered in the 2026 funding round. Projects must be completed within the approved project timeframe.
Yes. Applicants are expected to provide a 50% contribution, which may be cash, in-kind support, or a combination of both. The contribution must be clearly linked to delivering the project.
